Dear Sir,

May I make the following corrections to Mr Welch’s error-strewn letter of 22 December (‘Labour Voters Supported UKIP’):

(1) County Durham’s Primary School outcomes are among the best in the country, not the worst as he asserts.

(2) Durham County Council is not financial incompetent or undemocratic:

• DCC’s outsourcing of care home provision was an unavoidable response to government cuts which he supports.

• The Teaching Assistants’ dispute is distressing and contentious, but both sides agree that it is about equal rights.

• Council Taxpayers do NOT pay twice for the A167 lights.

• DCC’s handling of the Cricket Club crisis is common sense, not clueless.

(3) And meanwhile, at the national level:

• The Labour Party does not support unilateral disarmament.

• Labour advocates a balanced budget, with infrastructure investment.

• Labour’s plans for rail renationalisation are popular and much-needed.

If you are interested in the ‘Post-Truth’ Assertions are Just Wrong details, I have answered Mr Welch’s points at greater length on my blog: http:// bit.ly/AWPTL

We need to beware of long ranting lists of false claims and exaggerated promises, however assertively proclaimed.
