Dear Sir,
Last weekend I had the pleasure of accompanying the Mayor to two events. Firstly on Saturday we were invited to Moore Lane Sports Club to welcome Mike Amos and a group of fellow walkers including George Courtney the former FIFA referee, who were at the beginning of their “Last Legs Walk” to all of the Ebac Northern League football grounds to celebrate Mike’s last year as the League Chairman. In doing so they are hoping to raise £10,000 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and local charities nominated by each of the Clubs in the League.
The Mayor presented Mike Amos with a pennant to commemorate his visit to Newton Aycliffe FC. We then watched the first half of the opening match of the season against Marske FC, last year’s league champions. Glad to say Newton Aycliffe FC won 2-1. C’mon Newton Aycliffe FC! There was also a cricket match taking place, and I would urge the people of the town to go along to one of their matches as it is a cheap day out for all the family, and who knows any youngsters might get interested enough to join the junior teams and one day rise up through the ranks and become a future Wayne Rooney or James Anderson.
We then attended a church Service to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of St. Clare’s Church. Following the Service we had a cup of tea and refreshments in the church hall and looked through photographs and newspaper cuttings from the last 60 years of St. Clare’s. What a privilege and a pleasure it was to attend both these events. It was just a shame that so few residents were in attendance on Sunday.
