Dear Sir,

I read the letter in last weeks Newton News, ” PAVEMENT PARKING IS ILLEGAL.” May a first correct the writer by saying “PAVEMENT PARKING ISN’T ILLEGAL,” and needs to read the Highway Code Rules they quoted (240 to 249) again.

Yes it is totally illegal to park on the pavement in London, but it isn’t elsewhere as yet in the UK. Although there is a consultation taking place regards to implementing it for the rest of the UK.

Pavement parking becomes illegal only if the pavement is obstructed and pedestrians, including prams, pushchairs, wheelchairs and disability scooters, can’t get past and the culprit can be fined and vehicle towed. I agree it is annoying when people park on the pavement and not on the road, but I think some do it out of habit and I don’t condone it.

Regarding Driveways and Dropped Kerbs, yes it an offence to block a Dropped Kerb, Driveway (only if it has a Dropped Kerb) and Access to Property, but regards Having Vehicles Removed From Private Driver Ways (I assume vehicles actually parked on the drive) is a Civil Matter not a Criminal Offence.
