Funding from Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership (GAMP) has been used to help alleviate parking problems at Simpasture Shops in Newton Aycliffe.
The shops were built in the 1950s and were in much need of additional parking improvements. Supported by GAMP, the scheme included increasing the number of parking spaces by constructing a new lay-by, building of a new footway and the installation of bollards to improve pedestrian safety.
GAMP supported the project with £40,542 from Durham County Councillors Eddy Adam and Kate Hopper’s Neighbourhood Budgets.
The work was carried out after businesses and the local residents association raised their concerns. Their concerns highlighted that parking, especially during peak times was causing conflict within the area. Similar issues were also raised at local PACT meetings.
Acting on these concerns, both Councillors worked with Durham County Council’s Highway Services to deliver the project.
Brian Riley, GAMP Coordinator, said: “The Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership, through the Neighbourhood Budgets of Cllr Adam and Cllr Hopper have funded this project as a direct response to issues identified by the community and local businesses.”
Cllr Kate Hopper and Cllr Eddy Adam, commented: “Parking problems were identified as an issue around the shops, with many residents and businesses becoming aggrieved that motorists were sometimes not being considerate to others when parking their vehicles”.
“It is hoped that the additional parking will help alleviate the issues around the shopping area at peak times.”
