On Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th October the Stampede event will take place at Newcastle Racecourse. This challenging but fun cross-country assault course challenges the fitness levels of all involved, but is a fantastic event to get involved in.
Macmillan Nurse, Yvonne Anderson and one of her former patients, Sue Brierley are taking on that challenge to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Sue began supporting Macmillan in 2012 when she took part in a walk for Macmillan in memory of her dad. Little did she know a few years later she herself would be diagnosed with breast cancer which is when she was first introduced to her Macmillan nurse Yvonne, who has been an integral part of Sue’s life since.
Sue said “I don’t know how I would have coped without Yvonne. She’s supported me in so many ways. Not only helping me deal with the side effects of my treatment, which I found incredibly hard, but also being a listening ear when my diagnosis started to have a huge impact on my work. She was able to offer me advice and support on how to manage the difficulties I was having and has ultimately given me the confidence to set up my own business, The Gables-podcamping which a few years ago I would never have been able to even contemplate”
Sue is now in remission with yearly checks however Yvonne is still a big part of her life. When Sue mentioned she was signing up for the stampede to raise money and give something back to Macmillan for the support she’d received, Yvonne didn’t hesitate in suggesting she would sign up herself!
Sue and Yvonne will be taking part in the Stampede at Newcastle Racecourse, together they will run, walk and crawl through what could be a very muddy course! Sue said, “nothing will be as bad as what I have been through”.
