Record temperatures this summer resulted in an increase in road-side emergency call-outs with the RAC quoting up to 30% increase in costal areas, but ask yourself this, when was the last time you looked under your car bonnet, do you even know where the catch is? Seized-up bonnet catches account for many summer roadside call-outs including, air conditioning problems, engines overheating, broken fans and cooling related problems.
It sounds sensible but checking your vehicle prior to summer holidays is probably the last priority on most people’s check list. However, many garages (Ramseys included) now offer free summer health checks ensuring your heading for the sun and not the hard-shoulder.
Here’s our top ten tips to safer motoring this summer…
1. Always carry a spare set of keys for your vehicle and keep them in safe place.
2. Ask your garage to check the cooling system and fan, the main cause of over-heating
3. Check windscreen fluid levels and wiper blades for wear and tear
4. Check tyres and pressure. If you’re unsure ask your garage to do this for you. Minimum tread can mean a maximum fine. It’s also worth remembering to check the spare too.
5. Any dashboard warning lights should be identified and checked by your local dealer
6. Check oil levels
7. Plan your journey with regular breaks for rest and refreshments (although avoid eating large meals before driving)
8. Take extra supplies of medication, they may not be able if you’re abroad
9.  If you’re planning a long journey, remember to bring games or audio books to keep the children entertained.
10. Keep a first aid kit in your car all the time.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and safe motoring
