Dear Sir,
After visiting the street lighting section of Durham County Council’s web site it states: “Our policy is to enable roads and footpaths to be used safely by providing, improving and maintaining effective and efficient street lighting and illuminated traffic signs. This helps to improve environmental standards and community safety.”
If this is the case, why are the new lights so poor? The lighting is so bad that the streets cannot possibly be safer.  It may be more efficient/cheaper for DCC, but in terms of actual lighting quality I feel it will prove to be a danger to people who need to actually walk in the dark/dimly lit streets when you have “lit areas” where you can hardly see the footpaths to dense shadow areas where the light does not penetrate at all.
There is no way that I will allow my child to leave the house to walk anywhere in the evening due to the possible dangers that may lurk in the now plentiful shadows.
I would welcome the Council’s comments and views as to why our well-lit street has now become very dark.  I cannot think of any positive reasons for DCC’s decision in changing what was adequate lighting to extremely poor and unsafe lighting.
