The installation of a new crossing on a busy Chester-le-Street road is set to help residents access shops and services safely.
Durham County Council has added a new traffic island and dropped kerbs on Picktree Lane which will allow pedestrians to cross the road in two parts and protect them from passing vehicles.
A bus stand on the road has also been re-located away from a busy roundabout as part of the safety improvements.
The installation follows concerns for residents who have reported difficulties crossing the road, which links the A167 with Chester-le-Street marketplace.
Cllr Carl Marshall, Cabinet member for economic regeneration, including transport, said:
“Picktree Lane is a significant throughway, linking the north of the town and neighbouring villages to the A167 and A1M, but it’s also an important route for pedestrians who need to access public transport and local amenities.
“Residents told us that they found it difficult to cross the road when traffic is heavy and we’ve made these changes in response.
“The new crossing is a key addition which will improve the safety of all road users in the area during busy periods by providing a protected refuge in the centre of the road.”
