Newton Aycliffe Youth FC Girls U13’s reached the Final of the Russell Foster League Cup after a stunning comeback against Washington AFC Wildcats last Saturday.
Trailing 0-3 at half-time, the girls kept their heads and continued to press for that crucial next goal. From a corner, the ball was swooped in to reduce the arrears. The girls were back in it and with 10 minutes to go, and from another corner they scored a second via a precise header. As the tension mounted and with time running out they won yet another corner on the left – the inswinger evaded everyone to loop over the goalkeeper for a last gasp equaliser! Full time 3-3.
No extra time as they went straight to the dreaded penalty shoot-out! Cool heads were required and the girls duly delivered and progressed to the Final winning 3-1 on penalties. A superb display by everyone and a great advert for Girls’ football.
Well done girls and onto a meeting with Lumley Girls in the Cup Final next May. If any girl in Years 7 or 8 are interested in playing football, the team trains indoors at Greenfield Community & Arts College each Wednesday 6.30pm-7.30pm.
