Saturday not only brought a new month but a new chapter in the resurgence of Newton Aycliffe Rugby Union Club. With the new season kicking off in a matter of weeks with a tough cup tie at home to local rivals Barnard Castle there is no respite from training but the club still finds time to prove it is a family oriented fun place to be.
This saw a noon training session on the beach of the North Gare, Seaton Carew. This was a family day with children playing safely in the dunes and shallow waters and partners preparing picnics and BBQ`s.
Just out of ear shot was the grunts and groans of the players being put through their paces by coaches Peter Ryans and Dale and Liam Kelly. With sand between their toes the lads got down to the business end of proceedings. Shuttle runs, training drills and of course the odd punishing accent of the dunes.
We may not have been able to supply the post-session iced plunge pools favoured by the premiership clubs, but a cooling dip in the North Sea after the running about soon eased those aches and pains.
With the North East weather being its usual unpredictable self and STAYING warm and dry a few hours of family fun concluded the day. The smell of Bangers and Burgers cooking reached far and wide, with dog walkers struggling to contain the charges on their leashes. The club is not only building on the playing side but also making its self a place for all the family to come along and enjoy the game of Rugby.
The club is always on the lookout for players of all abilities and ages, whether you’re just starting out or in the twilight of your sporting career you will be made most welcome. If you’ve never played and are just curious come along and give it a try.
Training is now on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 7pm and Saturdays from 1pm at Newton Aycliffe Sports Club, Moore Lane. Contact Coach Peter Ryans for training programme details. Aycliffe Rugby sponsored by Whitehouse Funeral Service.
