Last Sunday Friends of West Park volunteers working with Steve Cooper the Environment Officer of GATC cleared about a quarter of the top lake of algae/pond weed.
Steve Cooper had to take away one van load and still come back on Monday for a second load. Ken Robson Chairman, Arun Chandran Secretary Andy Anderson and Steve Cooper all donned waders and Richie Bainbridge and Elaine Robson assisted from the edges of the lake.
It was very hard work, and a new net was tried out from the Council, trawling the lake, but the bottom of the net wasn’t heavy enough to reach the full depth. Hopefully Works Staff at GATC can modify it with extra weights as this would save a lot of hand raking.Thanks to Friends group member Elizabeth Norman of Ashfield who brought tea and biscuits and to Chris & Paul Thompson for their moral support.
“We intend to keep on doing a bit at a time probably every Sunday until we get the algae problem down totally, but this will take some time and anyone willing to help should contact Ken Robson on 321471 or myself on 313224.
