Dear Sir,

There can be few women over the age of 50 unfamiliar with the symptoms of the menopause: hot flushes, mood swings, sleeplessness and vaginal dryness being most common. Given that these symptoms are caused by life-altering changes to women’s reproductive systems, it is hardly surprising that going through the menopause can feel at times like an overwhelming and uncontrollable assault on your whole being.

While some women might sail through the menopause with few difficulties, others will suffer to a greater degree. Most women, however, will understand the pressures of trying to maintain performance at work while going through these changes, as well as feeling the stigma associated with them.

Employers are under no obligation to consider the specific needs of menopausal women. Under a Labour government, this will change. Large employers will have to provide training for managers to ensure that adjustments to working practices can be made where necessary. These should include flexibility and time off where necessary.

People are having to work longer before they can retire – and remember, if the current government gets its way, that could be up to age 75! It is only right that, when women go through one of the most difficult periods in their lives, they can be assured of supportive treatment at work. Bear in mind also that this will not happen without a Labour government!

Yours faithfully
