Dear Sir,
Newton Aycliffe Working-men’s Club, affectionately known as “The Big Club” was formed over 50 years ago by men who wanted a safe haven with facilities to improve the social life for themselves and their family.
Over time the building has been extended becoming a Mecca for entertainment, and enjoying the patronage of thousands.
Unfortunately time has also brought no favours as legislation by various governments, introduing austere measures, have caused the membership to reduce. This is graphically witnessed by the demise of the Southerne Club and Horndale Club.
To save “The Big Club” following this route the answer must be for all members to use their club as often as possible.
The club has rooms to facilitate all kinds of functions from small gatherings to large wedding all free of charge. Refreshments are cheaper than lots of places and are of a high quality.
New members are always welcome and the annual subscription is only £5. Younger members, 18 and over, are particularly welcome as they will ensure the future of the club and it remains part of the backbone of Newton Aycliffe in its diverse structure.
Never has the adage “Use it or Lose it” seemed so omnipresent.
G. C. Gill,
former Secretary of the club.
