The Mayor of Great Aycliffe, Councillor Mrs. Wendy Hillary, attended the War Memorial outside of St. Clare’s Church on Monday, 23rd June 2014 at 11 a.m. to raise a flag on behalf of the Town to mark the beginning of ‘Armed Forces Week’.  The Mayor was assisted by Officers and representatives from 102 Battalion (REME) and 201 Field Hospital (A.Det.). Standard Bearers from the Royal British Legion were present together with members of the British Legion.
The bagpipes were played by Arthur Middleton (a retired member of the 102 Battalion REME Pipe Band) during the service and flag raising.
Representatives of ‘Churches Together’ performed the Service, Revd. Julie Wing from St. Clare’s Church and Pastor Geoff Walvin from the Harvest Church.
The Council would like to thank the volunteers of St. Clare’s Church for supplying tea/coffee and biscuits in the church hall which was greatly appreciated.
A big thank you to Members of the Public and Councillors who were present to show the Town’s appreciation and support to our Armed Forces both past and present serving personnel.
