On 8th July numerous Primary schools from around the area participated in the Woodham Academy Maths Challenge: Timothy Hackworth, Aycliffe Village, Thornhill, St Francis and Chilton. This was an all-day event organised by the Woodham Mathematics department, with Mr Greaves coordinating.
The aim of the day is to allow the students to participate in mathematically challenging tasks whilst socialising with students from other schools.
The day was split in to four main parts; Limping seagulls and stellated octahedron making, “pentominoes”, “crystal maze” and a maths relay.
Each activity was awarded a winner: Chilton and St Francis, Aycliffe Village, Timothy Hackworth and Thornhill respectively.
The overall winners on the day were as follows: 3rd place – Thornhill team 2; 2nd place – Timothy Hackworth 1
First place (and overall winners) – Aycliffe Village team 1.
Students and staff alike had a very busy, entertaining day. The primary school students expressed that they particularly enjoyed creating the stellated octahedrons which teams took back to their schools, along with the prizes they each received.
Woodham Academy and the maths department would like to thank all teams, staff and students that participated in an extremely enjoyable day.
