Children at St Francis Primary School wrote to MP Phil Wilson, to express their concern and sadness that some hens are kept is confined conditions, unable to roam freely.
After reading the children’s individual letters, Phil was so moved he decided to visit the school to talk to the students about the issue of battery hens.
Whilst at the school the children told Phil that they did not think animals should be kept in such small cages, and that they deserved to be able to wander around freely to enjoy their lives.
The children also told Phil about all the animals they had seen both in school and out of school, with some children lucky enough to have visited the Pandas at Edinburgh Zoo.
During his visit the children also asked Mr Wilson about his job, and what an MP does. Mr Wilson explained to them that he represents all the people that live in Newton Aycliffe and the rest of Sedgefield Constituency in Parliament.
He also said a very important part of his job was being able to help his constituents should they have any problems, which is why he has an office in Newton Aycliffe Town Centre.
Commenting on his visit Phil said, “It is always great to visit a school and discuss an issue It is brilliant to see they are both interested in, and care about, the welfare of animals. Ms Lakey has a class of very caring and compassionate students.”
