St Joseph’s Catholic School, a member of The Bishop Hogarth Catholic Education Trust, had an outside learning day before the end of term. They were visited by local author Adam Bushnell, who came to help the children develop their story-telling skills.
The theme for ‘Natural World Day’ was the book called ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson.
Throughout the day the children carried out lots of activities such as making a stick man with the natural materials that they could find around school. They also painted a new story scene, incorporating mud, grass, leaves and water, and thought of ways to make different noises to add sound effects.
Towards the end of the day, Lyndsey Wilson from SC.OUT.ED, (a Science and Outdoor Education Specialist), assisted the children to toast apples with cinnamon over a camp fire.
The day was a huge success and the stories that the children created were incredible. Adam Bushnell commented “The children were exceptionally well behaved and very enthusiastic to learn and participate.”
Fiona Brown, Head Teacher, said: “We regularly have outdoor learning days as we feel the children benefit from the natural learning environment, gaining life skills and boosting their creative problem solving techniques. The children loved Natural World Day and thoroughly enjoyed the activities from Adam and Lyndsey. We are looking forward to planning the next one”
