The chance to commission Tonya Mitchell, a local heritage artist, was auctioned at a charity auction in aid of the Edith Jackson Trust. Whoever was the highest bidder could have any local landscape painted in oil.

Tonya says, “it was great having the opportunity to support a charity who builds schools abroad, as I was an English teacher and understand the importance of education in changing young people’s lives, “

The painting, which was a unique perspective of the Bailey in Durham City incorporating buildings from St John’s College, was completed and handed over to the winner, Dr Plyming, warden of Cranmer Hall St Johns Durham. He and the college loved it so much that they requested 250 cards of the image to be given to guests who visit the college and a stock to sell to anyone who might want a card to commemorate their time in the college.

The cards were delivered Tuesday morning, Dr Plyming commented: “This picture captures beautifully what is so special about St John’s College and Cranmer Hall – a collection of buildings in a unique position which have been home to a learning community for over 100 years. At the heart of the picture is the College Chapel where we continue to worship and pray for the life of our college within Durham University. Tonya is to be congratulated for a wonderful picture which repays closer examination”.

Tonya is thrilled that the college liked the painting so much and continues to produce work of the area she calls home.

About St John’s College:

St John’s College is like no other Durham college. Founded in 1909 and set in a series of beautiful listed buildings in the heart of Durham city, the College enjoys stunning views of Durham Cathedral and boasts gardens and lawns stretching down to the River Wear. We are one of the smallest colleges, renowned for our lively and welcoming atmosphere. The College has a degree of independence within the University, both financially and in its governance. Our students study for University degrees alongside members of other colleges, but we have the freedom to do things a little differently.” From https://www.dur.ac.uk/st-johns.college/
