As Chair of LFD I thank everyone in Newton Aycliffe for supporting this year’s BIG SPRING CLEAN. Overall over 3000 volunteers turned out throughout Co Durham and Darlington and removed over 5000 bags of litter plus 5 tons of rubbish removed from our Darlington River by the Environment Agency. It has proved a very successful event. The weather was far from perfect at times but it still did not stop those many people who know the importance of keeping our communities clean. The BIG SPRING CLEAN involved school children and adults of all ages and particular praise should be given to the many Newton Aycliffe young people who set such a good example by cleaning up their own area. Newton Aycliffe is a pleasant town and generally a clean town and residents should be justly proud of it. There are however, areas that are littered as reported in the Newton News from time to time and it is these areas that need some TLC – perhaps increased litter picks by the LA or some litter bins installed or some signs reminding people not to drop litter or perhaps all three but until silly unthinking people stop dropping litter there will be need for voluntary litter picks – so Newton Aycliffe litter pickers young and old – KEEP GOING you are doing a wonderful job much appreciated by the people of the town and your council..
