On Sunday 20th June, Hartlepool United played in the Northern League play off final against Torquay United at Bristol. It was a very exciting game and Hartlepool were winning 1-0 until Torquay’s goal keeper scored in the very last minute of the game, making it a 1-1 draw.
The game then went to extra time and penalties and local lad, Luke Molyneux, came off the bench, took a penalty and scored. Hartlepool won on penalties 5-4 and won promotion to League 2 of the Football League.
Luke started playing football for Newton Aycliffe Sports Club Under 7s team. He was scouted by Sunderland at 14 and was offered a two year scholarship at 16. He played for Sunderland Under 18s, Under 23s and made his professional debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 6th May 2018. Luke has been contracted to Hartlepool United for the last two years.
