The Labour Party has announced that its candidate in the forthcoming West Ward by-election will be Peter Davies, of 41 Ashfield, Newton Aycliffe.
Peter grew up in Newton Aycliffe and attended Greenfield School, before going on to achieve an honours degree from Northumbria University. He then trained to be a teacher at Newton Aycliffe’s own outstanding Durham SCITT facility, before gaining a job locally. He is an active member of the local community, working with young people on a daily basis, and intends to campaign for the development of opportunities for them.
Peter has always felt proud to come from and work in Newton Aycliffe, a town unique in our country’s history. His aim will be to protect the great things the town has to offer, and to drive development to make it even better.
Announcing Peter’s candidacy, Labour Party Branch Secretary Vince Crosby confirmed that the selection had been a unanimous decision of the West Ward members. “Mr Davies is Aycliffe born and bred. At the selection meeting he showed himself very knowledgeable on social issues and the things that affect the Town”.
Bob Fleming, Leader of Great Aycliffe Town Council, also supported the announcement – “Peter is intelligent, enthusiastic and hardworking. For the past two years he has attended Town Council meetings and meetings of the Town Council Labour Member’s Group and therefore is not new to council activities. I believe Peter is the type of young man who will help to drive our town forward in the future”.
And County Councillor John D Clare – formerly deputy headteacher at Greenfield School – was proud to add his support for a former pupil: “Peter was a star student at Greenfield – a perfect mixture of ability, perseverance and social awareness. I really hope he is elected, because he will be a fabulous councillor in the years to come”.
Peter has been a member of the Labour Party for five years, and says it is because he steadfastly believes the words on his membership card: ‘By the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone’. “I have seen the damage first hand that the Tories are inflicting on our community, and I know the Labour Party is the party of hope”, he says.
