After the huge response to a request for knitters to make jumpers and blankets for babies in Africa former Councillor, Dorothy Bowman has a new project to help people nearer home. She realised that many older people this winter, because of the cost of heating, will be sitting in the cold only using their heating sparingly.
She is challenging everyone who is able to to knit to make Shawls to put round shoulders. Small squares of wool can be sewn together. Dorothy has lots of 4 ply wool on cones that will knit together to make double knitting if you would like to have a go.
She aims to distribute at least 100 shawls in Newton Aycliffe along with a greeting card before Christmas.
The size needs to be two metres by one metre or 48” x 84”  (4ft.x 7ft). You can knit larger or smaller if you wish as long as they will keep the recipients warm and cosy.
If you can knit hats that would be useful too! They need to be at least 24ins round when joined up. The finished goods can be left at the Youth Centre opposite Tesco or contact Dorothy on 308094 or 07967 901477 to arrange collection.
