Dear Sir,

I read the letters from Derreck Pinkney and John Clare regarding the use of School Aycliffe Lane by HGV’s plus the comment that people in Middridge experience similar problems. It would appear these vehicles are becoming a scourge on our otherwise peaceful area. I live in the apartment block alongside the Blue Bridge and at any time, night or day, up to 30 of these massive vehicles come speeding off the Business Park up to the Town Centre roundabout to turn round and come thundering back down St. Cuthbert’s Way.

It seems the roundabout is used to either allow easier access to their destination or to give them an exit back to the A167. The speed at which the enter our built up residential area is an accident waiting to happen as St. Cuthbert’s Way has become a “rat run” for HGV’s. Not only do residents have to suffer from noise and pollution, but also vibration which causes the whole block to shudder to the point damage is caused to internal walls. I fear a complaint to our local authorities would just be a “buck passing” exercise. There is no signage restricting size and weight of vehicles entering the residential area, but they would be ignored anyway according to your correspondents. These huge vehicles have no right to abuse our enjoyment of an otherwise peaceful environment.

J. Graham
