Woodham Burn Primary School have recently had some very special visitors from Japan. The Teikyo University students worked with children demonstrating a range of traditional Japanese themed activities, for example:

• Origami

• Calligraphy (painting of Japanese Kanji symbols)

• How to use chopsticks

• Trying on Yukata (traditional Japanese clothing, similar to Kimano)

These fun, hands-on experiences were a great opportunity to learn a lot about the Japanese people’s culture.

The children also learned some beginner Japanese, the official language of Japan, including: ohayou gozaimasu – Good morning arigatou gozaimasu – Thank you

The children found it all very interesting and were captivated with the new things they learned.

Miss Marshall, year 3 teacher said “Having visitors from Japan brought to life the work that the children have been doing in the classroom. The children enjoyed all of the activities”.

Mrs Edwards, Head Teacher said “It has been excellent working with Teikyo University of Japan in Durham. They have inspired the children and taught them so much about the Japanese culture and we are so grateful to them for this”.
