Darlington’s league campaign began in a very hit and miss fashion. Last Saturday saw us slip to a 2-0 away defeat at Buxton. The result was disappointing enough in itself but Adam Nowakowski was injured after just eight minutes following a clash of heads.
Following lengthy treatment he left the pitch to be replaced by David Dowson. We hope Adam makes a swift recovery. In contrast, our first home game on Tuesday night, against Frickley Athletic, was rather good.
In the drizzle of Bishop Auckland, Darlo put in a good, strong performance and emerged worthy 3-0 winners with the goals coming from, man of the match, Tom Portas, Nathan Cartman and new captain Kevin Burgess.
Despite the weather Darlington played really well with notable performances from Hunter, Burgess and Cartman who for a little striker can really upset defences, no matter how big they are! It was also good to see Graeme Armstrong get a good run out following his big injury in the play-off final.
Next up is the home game against Barwell on Saturday, who are a few places ahead of us on goal difference, followed by a trip to Workington (Borough Park, CA14 2DT) on Tuesday night. Both will be very difficult games but good tests for this squad.
I am very pleased to announce that the group will this season be sponsoring Brian Atkinson’s kit. As an Aycliffe lad it seemed fitting that he should be our first sponsorship.
The next meeting of Newton Aycliffe Darlington FC supporters group takes place on Wednesday 9 September, the day after our home game against Ramsbottom, at 7pm in the Iron Horse. As ever all are welcome to attend and we look forward to seeing new faces.
Keep the faith.
