If you walk through various areas of Newton Aycliffe you may come across a pretty pink plant called Himalayan Balsam. This attractive plant was first introduced to gardens of Britain in 1839,  but soon found its way out of gardens and has been invading our countryside ever since. While many native invertebrates such as bees love the plant as a source of nectar, if left to spread, it will out complete all native plant species causes a single stand of this invasive weed. The shallow root system can them result in unstable river backs and increased river erosion problems.

The plant is well established in Woodham Burn and for several years Great Aycliffe Town Council have been attempting to control it by pulling and/or cutting it before it goes to seed. Local residents are encouraged to come along and assist the Council in controlling the plant during a public Balsam Bashing event on Tuesday 25th July between 4pm and 6pm. During the event participants can assist to pull as many balsam plants as they can. Gloves and instructions will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear long sleeved tops and trousers and meet in the Town Park at 4pm. If you require more information please contact Great Aycliffe Town Council on 01325 300700.
