Heighington u12s travelled to Silloth last weekend to take part in the Silloth tournament – a much anticipated tournament with teams travelling from around the North to attend. Heighington played their first game on Saturday which saw them beat Peterlee 5 nil. Amazing play continued throughout both days which resulted in the lads winning 6 out of 7 games against teams from Blyth, Ashington and Ellington with only 3 goals conceded. Heighington made the final and were up against local favourites Abbeytown who had also won 6 out of 7 games, so the lads went into the game knowing this was going to be a hard match but they were very focussed and determined to win the title. From the whistle the game was a battle with both teams not giving anything away.

Chances from both sides with some excellent saves continued the electric atmosphere with teams from all games spectating. The game was very close and it was looking like the first goal from either side would clinch the final. The game finished 0-0 and went to penalties. Heighington went first in the shoot out and kept their nerve to score the first 5 penalties and just when it looked like it was going to sudden death, Abbeytown smashed their 5th kick against the cross bar resulting in Heighington being crowned winners! The pitch erupted in cheers and tears from the lads which showed what this meant to them. Great sportsmanship shown as they went over to the opposition and offered condolences and support to some very upset players.

The excitement continued and the lads went to the presentation, dressed very smartly and went on stage to meet Manchester United legend Gary Pallister who congratulated them on winning the tournament and presented them with individual trophies as well as a very large winners trophy! Manager Gary Fraser said the lads were superb all weekend and played some amazing football. They deserved to win and gave 100% in every game. Well done to all the boys and thank you to the parents who helped and  supported the team. A special thanks to the coaches Gavin Kell and Art Rudd for their hard work and commitment and for riding the roller coaster of emotions with me over the 2 days! That was nail biting stuff! Heighington are looking for one or two experienced players to join us as we prepare for 11 a side u13s. Contact Gavin on 07710 707327 for more information.
