This years event was held on Saturday 6th November. The pandemic had prevented the 2020 bonfire and a very large crowd packed the village green in anticipation of the bonfire lighting and the fireworks display.
The bonfire was probably the largest we have seen and it went up impressively. The fireworks that followed were spectacular and enjoyed by all the spectators.
This event wouldn’t be possible without the support of Tony and Diane Goodman of the Bay Horse. They fund the public insurance, a great firework display and other incidental expenses. A big thanks to all their staff for the outside catering and the hectic bar work.
Huge thanks are also extended to the very kind people who donated materials to make the bonfire safe and a success:
Simon Shepherd (Edgar Shepherd Sawmill) for donating 40 plus wooded pallets to build the bonfire perimeter.
Brian Knox (Bracks Farm) for donating the straw bale used to light the bonfire.
Peter Cockburn (Newbiggin Farm) and Alan Gibson for the metal stakes to form the public safety barrier.
Rob Appleton (North Yorkshire Timber, Darlington) for donating timber for the safety and instruction notices.
Jane and Peter Gosnay (Spar Shop) for collecting donations towards the cost of the fireworks.
For Steve Jackson, John Wood and Darryl Gregory this was the last bonfire they will organise. It has been a pleasure over many years and was one contribution to village life out of so many that makes Heighington a special community to be part of. Now there is a new team of volunteers who will take on the organisation of the bonfire in 2022. The core of the new team is Phil Harrison, Holly and Lee White and Michelle and Phil Radcliffe – many thanks to them for coming forward. We are sure that they will be able to attract more people to help.
Also deserving of thanks for their help in preparation, supervision on the night and clearing up afterwards are Paul Atkinson, Kian White, Shaun Wilson, Tony Kay and members of Heighington FC.
Well done to all those who contributed to a great night, bringing the community together during a difficult period. Here’s to next year!
Steve and Darryl
