It’s the new year and the start of what we hope will be another very successful year at Athena Gymnastics Academy, based at both Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre and Aycliffe Leisure Centre. Last year the Gymnasts were very busy competing at local and national level, which culminated in several of our Gymnasts competing in National Finals against some of the best young gymnasts in the country.
Athena were also well received at the Gymfusion 2014, held in Newcastle, receiving excellent reviews from both Spectators and other Gymnastic Teams at this event.
The annual Christmas display, held at the Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre in December, was watched by over 300 spectators who came to support the Academy. The showcase involved all gymnasts from the toddlers in Rec 1, the superb Disability Sunday Group as well as gymnasts who will be competing in National Competitions in 2015. A fantastic time was had by all.
Gymnastics has become more popular since 2012 as Team GB, and the Home Nation Gymnastic Teams have done so well in International competitions since the Olympics were staged in London. The television programme last year, ‘Tumble’, watched by millions on a Saturday night, also brought the sport into the public eye. So could you or could your son or daughter be the next Beth Tweddle or Louis Smith? Would you like to follow in the footsteps of Tumble winner Bobby Lockwood?
We offer a wide variety of classes, starting with our Rec 1 toddlers aged 3+ to older beginner’s classes, as well as our Disability class which takes place on a Sunday morning at Newton Aycliffe.
We are always on the look out for more gymnasts to join our Boys team, ‘The Warriors’, who train at Shildon on a Tuesday night. Athena also offer other classes, all to help enhance our Gymnasts including our very popular Acro class which could lead to National Competition, to our Flexibility Class. All our coaches, and staff are appropriately qualified and CRB checked so you can ensure your child is working in a professional and safe environment.
