Dear Sir,
Are the good people of Newton Aycliffe and the Highways Authority aware of the accident just waiting to happen at the crossing in Greenwell Road outside Aldi?
Drivers are, and I dread approaching this crossing because of the number of people streaming out of Aldi and straight across without looking. Yes, many are road conscious, but many more are not.
Bicycles come hurtling across, young un’s with a mobile attached firmly to their ear, or texting quite unaware of an approaching vehicle.
I slow down when I approach the crossing and just when I think it is safe to proceed, another load of lemmings  bent on suicide decide to cross and that is only from one direction. There is also pedestrians from the direction of Argos and Tesco.
The road is a nightmare and not only do we have to avoid traffic coming the other way (some heavy goods delivery vehicles) but have to avoid them overtaking the cars parked outside the Cubby, thereby coming on to our side of the road whilst our minds are focussed on the crossing.
I know not what technical issues were considered when the crossing was installed, but surely it could have been a crossing with lights, making it far safer to cross.
High time the police and Co. Durham Highways Department came out and iinspected what is going on choosing a busy time.
