A group of Year 9 Girls from Greenfield Community College recently participated in an International, sport, dance and artistic event, organised by Durham County Council. The event, which took place in the Somme region of France, involved over 350 young people worldwide.
Becky Adams, Katie McLaren, Ami Henderson, Sophie Hayes, Samantha Clarke, Hannah Day and Ellie Jade Anderson were selected to represent Greenfield at the event, which first established a link with the Somme region over 30 years ago.
Greenfield was selected to represent ‘Team Durham’ and ‘England’ to compete alongside other schools from the area including Parkside, North Durham Academy and Durham Johnston. We were pleased to be chosen from the many schools in the region to represent our area.
The group of girls and accompanying Greenfield staff were ‘on tour’ for 4 days which involved two days of travelling on a coach from Durham to Albert in the Somme region of France. This was very timely as it coincided with the commemorations and celebrations of the anniversary of the First World War. There were two days of sporting events which involved Rock Climbing, Futsal, Kayaking, Orienteering, Cross Country Running and Archery.
Out of more than 30 teams, England came 4th overall with our girls claiming the individual title for the Rock climbing. The dancers worked with a professional choreographer for two days and performed a very poignant piece in front of delegations of each of the represented countries; Germany, Australia, Hungary, Italy and of course France.
Having been given the opportunity to visit this famous historic area of Europe, pupils took the opportunity to visit the War museum of Albert and laid a wreath at Thiepval on behalf of the people of County Durham. Students were visibly moved when they visited the monument which bears the names of 72,195 missing British and South African soldiers of WW1 without a known grave. It was an incredibly emotional experience to accept the scale of the number of names- some of whom belonged to the Durham Light Infantry.
This most recent international visit is one of many that have taken place this year, as Greenfield continues to place importance on Global Learning and internationalism.
