Year 7 students at Greenfield Community College have been sampling outdoor life at Ullswater as part of their wider learning experience.
The 46 strong Year 7 group were thrilled with the range of activities on offer and rose to the challenge even though the weather was testing at times. “It was an amazing opportunity,” said student Courtney, “it made me feel really good about myself”.
The students showed resilience and independence as they took on the long hike to camp base where they spent the night outdoors. One of the most popular activities was gorge walking and the group enjoyed taking part in activities such as hiking, rock climbing, tunnelling and jog and dip. “I loved the sense of adventure and how you could learn to be independent” said student Alexandra.
Greenfield Staff and Students have been visiting Howtown Centre for over ten years, an excellent outward-bound centre in a fabulous setting in the lake district. The students were keen to take up the offer and were rewarded with a valuable experience, they not only found it helpful for their academic studies but gained new expertise in team building, made new friends and gained confidence in the process.
”It was a fantastic out of classroom experience where students showed real team building and leadership skills, they should be very proud of their achievements” said Subject Leader Mr Robson.
The impact of the trip is huge and a fantastic opportunity for the students. Just to spend time away from home in the Lake District is wonderful, but to be pushed and challenged and learn new skills is so valuable for furthering their education.
