This week students at Greenfield Community College had the chance to take part in a “Junior Master Chef” competition – supported by Livin’. The competition was funded by Livin’ to enable young people to understand the importance and value of living and budgeting within limits.
Before the cooking section of the competition, the young people took part in a session on budgeting; considering how to make flavoursome, balanced and healthy dishes for two to four people within a £5 allowance.
After researching different options the class of Year 8 Greenfield students created a range of dishes for the competition including lasagne, stir fry, quiche, stuffed peppers, fish dishes, and spicy vegetable wraps. All the recipes and meals were fantastic, and all the students demonstrated excellent organisation skills, good personal and kitchen practices and excellent food and hygiene awareness throughout the competition. Congratulations to our top prize winners and thanks to Livin’ for donating the prizes (2 fire HD tablets and a camera), as well as a £10 voucher for each student who took part.
3rd – Sarah Rennison – Salmon with Roast Potatoes and Asparagus
2nd – Adara Natrass – Chicken and Leek Pie with Filo Pastry
1st – Jasmine Beadle – Thai Green Curry and Rice
The Greenfield students are editing their recipes ready to be included in a booklet which Livin’ will give to clients when they move into new homes or if they would just like some inspiration for eating healthily on a budget.
This was a fantastic experience for all the students and staff involved – the students were enthusiastic, relishing the chance to experiment and are now looking forward to their next challenge!
