Students from Greenfield Community College have been extending their learning through theatre visits recently, adding an extra dimension to their studies. An impressive cohort of 95 students made the trip to Newcastle’s Theatre Royal to see the acclaimed production of ‘An Inspector Calls’ this week.  The show, produced by Stephen Daldry (of Billy Elliot fame) is ‘hailed as the theatrical event of its generation’.  The quality production is a timely experience for Year 11 as the play forms part of their curriculum studies, and includes an extensive resource pack for teaching staff. The visit was a great success. Mr Smith, Director for Improvement in English, along with members of the English department, accompanied the students and they were thrilled with the performance. Mr Smith stated: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the events unfolding on stage. It gave them the opportunity to see the performance in real-time, bringing the structure, characterisation and the themes of the text to life – alongside some fairly dramatic moments!  All students found it a positive experience.” This follows a visit to Durham Gala Theatre by Year 11 drama students, who had the opportunity to ‘tread the boards’ recently.  Students had the chance to enjoy the  production of William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’ which ‘explores the dark side of humanity’.  The production was coproduced with Durham Student Theatre and directed by Annie Rigby of Unfolding Theatre.  The students were able to take part in a professional workshop, inspiring their studies in their final year. There has also been a fabulous programme of live performance opportunities at our school this week.  Greenfield Arts were delighted to welcome Theatre Hullaballoo’s ‘Take Off Festival’ with quality productions of ‘Is this a Dagger’ and ‘My Friend Selma’.  Over 500 students from Greenfield Community College, local primary schools, delegates and audiences from the local community were able to enjoy innovative productions of great quality, alongside a visit to the current exhibition, ‘Norman Cornish: A Man of Destiny.
