Woodham Dance Academy are exceptionally busy around this time of year. They recently competed at the Great Big Dance Off in Warrington, where they were placed second. They also held their annual Dance Showcase at Woodham Academy where they were able to perform pieces to their families and friends.

Monday 24th April saw the Dance Academy put on a spectacular performance at the ‘Feet First’ Dance Showcase, which was held at the Gala Theatre, Durham. The Dance Academy has been part of this performance over the years and work hard to prepare creative, exciting pieces for the audience.

They performed in two separate groups that showcased two different styles of dance, both of which were fun, energetic and complex. One of the groups performed a piece that is always enjoyed by the audience and really brings the atmosphere to life. The 90’s mash up was choreographed by Kay Clarey of Joanne Banks Dancers.

Not only is this technically difficult, but it requires a huge amount of stamina as the dancers are required to stay in character throughout their performance. The bright colours and beaming smiles really showed off the talent and hard work that went into this piece. The other group performed the jive. This is a much loved piece that has been choreographed by Hannah Kent, Director of Woodham Sports Academy.

The dance is Woodham Dance Academy’s own take of a traditional 1930’s ballroom dance. The students really show resilience, as the dance is physically demanding due to its high energy and continuous bounce.

Whilst at the Gala Theatre, Woodham Academy’s students were complimented on their outstanding behaviour and were great ambassadors for the school. They remained professional when performing and also showed appreciation for the other schools that performed in the show.

Due to their success, the Dance Academy have been asked to perform at a local event to support a Cancer Support Group who are hosting a fundraising event at Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre. There will be table top stalls, children’s entertainment and professional stalls. There will also be the performance from Woodham’s Dance Academy. This event will be held from 10:30am until 2:30pm on Saturday 1st July.
