David and Jill Stevens of Marshall Road celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on 30th September 2017. The Town Mayor, Wendy Hillary, visited the couple and presented a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the Council.

David – who was born in New York, Tyneside and was serving in London with the Household Cavalry, the Life Guards met Jill, from London, one evening whilst he was on guard.

They made a date to go to the pictures and from then the romance grew. After getting married, and living in Richmond on Thames until David was demobbed after six years, they moved to Newton Aycliffe in 1968. David worked in several jobs until he settled into being a fork lift driver, spending several years at Courtaulds in Spennymoor, and then Perstorp on Aycliffe Business Park. He finally retired after working at Roman Showers for a while.

Jill was a punched card operator when they moved from London, and spent eleven years as a payroll worker at Magnet and finally a receptionist with the NHS before retiring.

They have three children, Martin, Julie and Glyn and four grandchildren whom they enjoy spending time with. Julie now lives in South Wales with her husband and two children but they see them often. Martin is married and lives in Darlington with his family and Glyn lives in Newton Aycliffe.

They spent their anniversary at home with family and friends and will be visiting South Wales to have another celebration with their daughter. They both love touring in the Scottish Highlands and had a week there as part of their anniversary celebrations.

Their first houses were in and Cheviot Place finally moving to Marshall Road where they have lived for 35 years.
