A grant has helped answer the request of parents by giving youngsters an extra playdate.

Durham Area Action Partnership (AAP) and a Durham County Councillor have helped provide an extra playgroup session at Pittington Village Hall.

The additional afternoon session has been made possible with a grant of £1,000 from Cllr Bill Kellett’s neighbourhood budget, through the Durham AAP.

Cllr Kellett said: “The funding will help to cover hall hire costs, materials for crafts and healthy snacks for the children. Playgroups allow both children and parents to socialise. It also makes great use of local facilities and helps bring the community together.”

Julie Brown, who runs the playgroup, said: “Parents were approaching me asking if more could be done for the younger children in the village, especially on an afternoon.

“We are thankful for the funding from Cllr Kellett and for the help given by Durham Area Action Partnership in facilitating the grant. Pittington Village Hall provides a wide range of activities for people in the village so it’s great we can do something extra for the children.”

The playgroup sessions are open to all pre-school children and their carers, and are run by local volunteers.

The new session is held at 1.30pm every Wednesday during term time. Other sessions take place at 10am on a Monday and Wednesday.

Each session costs £1 per child and 50p for any additional children, which helps toward the running costs of the group.
