Aycliffe’s County Councillors have funded the printing of a guide to the section railway of line from Heighington Station to the Locomotion Museum in Shildon. The pamphlet has been produced for the Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway by Archaeo-Environment director Caroline Hardie, and it identifies features of interest. The County Councillors will be giving a copy of the pamphlet FREE to everyone who walks the Locomotion Way next Saturday 1st October on the Rotary Club’s ‘Community Jaunt’ – one of a day of events celebrating the 191st anniversary of the S&DR, the world’s first steam-hauled public railway. Local County Councillor John D. Clare explained: “When I was a teacher at Greenfield School, I used to point out the line through my classroom window, and remark how amazing it was that, immediately next to us, was the first railway in the world! Next Saturday’s celebrations are to build awareness and enthusiasm as we approach the bicentenary of the Railway in 2025, and we hope that giving people the walk guide will be a motivator.” Aycliffe’s ‘Community Jaunt’ will start at 2pm from Aycliffe Station, and join the celebrations on arrival at the Museum. One of the FREE entertainments there will be a steam train ride, also part-funded by the County Councillors. Aycliffe’s County Councillors are Eddy Adam, John D. Clare, Mike Dixon, Joan Gray, Jed Hillary, Kate Hopper and Sarah Iveson.  The Guide is one of seven available online at: http:// www.sdr1825.co.uk/walks. htm
