An annual free parking period has returned to give festive shoppers a small boost to their Christmas budgets.

Durham County Council is bringing back its ‘Free after 3’ offer which will see free parking available in council owned car parks after 3pm, every day in December.

Off street car parks and on-street spaces will benefit from the waiving of charges, with stickers being placed on all payment machines to let drivers know.

As well as ‘Free after 3,’ free parking will be available across the county after 10am on Saturday 7 December in all Durham County Council off-street car parks and on-street spaces. This coincides with Small Business Saturday, a national campaign which encourages people to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities.

Kieron Moralee, parking and transport infrastructure team leader at Durham County Council said: “Every year we try to help with one less cost for people, as the run up to Christmas is a busy time and can be expensive.

“Free after 3 also supports local shops who rely on footfall for a prosperous festive period. The free parking after 10am on the 7 December encourages people to shop local and support our small businesses.”

Details of all council car parks can be found at www.durham.gov.uk/parking

Drivers are advised that payment machines will not be switched off at times when charges are not in place and that money paid will not be refunded.

Ed: Please remember to support your local shops in Newton Aycliffe where parking is free all year round.
