Year 10 Geography students at Woodham Academy got the chance to enjoy a day at the seaside last week as part of their Controlled Assessment Fieldwork for their GCSE’s.
The group spent a day at the beauty spot at Saltburn by the Sea, collecting primary data for their assessment which forms a major part of their exam work. The assessment allows students to consider what makes a great tourist destination and what facilities are in place for high volume visits.
Students were encouraged to speak to members of the public and local shop keepers as well as capturing evidence using photographs. The work will be compiled in the summer term.
Activities during the visit included sketching the landscape, calculating footfall, assessing tourist attractions and examining traffic to determine where cars may have originated from. The visit took place over two days, with both days offering a different side to the weather. Students also got the chance to sample local fish and chips and ice cream.
