The 23rd August is the day when we remember the abolition of the slave trade and to mark it, on Saturday 22nd Aug, St Clare’s Church is showing the film “SELMA”.
This 2014 blockbuster tells the story of the Civil Rights marches from Selma to Montgomery in 1965 led by Rev Martin Luther King as part of the campaign for civil rights for the black American people.
It is a powerful, shocking story, brilliantly told.  King had already made his amazing “I have a dream” speech in 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington; been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his part in his non-violent campaign.
But in the American south the work continued, met time and again with violence. This is a story of amazing resilience and courage, of the unstoppable force of a people fighting for the same rights that we all enjoy.
It is a shocking but uplifting story, please come.  Tea, coffee and juice will be served at 1pm, included in the £2, £1 for children, and the film starts at 1-15pm.  Everyone is most welcome to come and experience a defining moment in the fight for a people’s rights.
