At Stephenson Way Academy and Nursery School pupils value the importance of treating everyone fairly and know that in doing so people are far happier.

Learning more about Fairtrade this week has highlighted that, sadly, in the wider world people are often treated unfairly when it comes to the sale of their goods. Indeed, children were shocked to find out that, despite working relentlessly, many farmers earn less than 70p per day for their produce.

In a bid to raise awareness of the plight of many producers, children carried out a range of challenges this week and as a result of their hard work and involvement, were delighted to receive the news that they have been awarded Fairtrade’s FairActive award.

The school’s Fairtrade Ambassadors recognised that buying Fairtrade products is just one way to support hardworking farmers and decided that hosting a Fairtrade bake-off would help to do just that. Across the course of the week, pupils considered what their favourite recipes were and studied Fairtrade produce that was available to see how easily it could be switched within a recipe. Each class voted for what they felt would be a winning recipe, popped on a pinny and got down to baking.

Once all of the culinary creations had been made, they were placed on display in the school hall for all to marvel at. Judging the entries were cake connoisseurs Mr Allen, Mr Pearson and head boy and girl Matthew and Paige, who had the tough job of sampling the sweet snacks in search of the winning recipe.

As well as taste, the entrants were also awarded marks for their presentation. It’s fair to say that the judges’ tastebuds were truly tantalised with a mouth-watering array of cakes, cookies and tray bakes, which made choosing a winner a near impossible task.

Torn in their decision making and, unable to choose between year 2’s chocolate refrigerator cake and Year 6’s banana crumble, they announced both as worthy winners of the coveted golden banana.

Huge congratulations to every class in school for their contribution and phenomenal effort in securing this fantastic achievement.
