Officers from Newton Aycliffe Neighbourhood Team teamed up with local schools this week to tackle road safety.

With around 2,000 deaths or serious injuries happening on roads around schools nationwide every year, officers in the town held a week of action to try to reduce issues that contribute to the problem, like excessive speed and inconsiderate parking.

Officers were at every junior school during drop off and pick up times, along with council licensing and parking enforcement officers, to police issues around people ignoring yellow zig-zag lines and other road related offences.

Speedwatches were held in Newton Aycliffe, Middridge, Aycliffe Village and School Aycliffe together with local councillors and colleagues from the force’s Operation Endurance team and the Road Policing Unit, resulting in a number of speeding tickets and warning notices being issued.

Officers from Durham County Council’s licensing department were also involved to target illegal scrap collectors and waste carriers.

Intelligence-led patrols were also carried out targeting those who are known to drive while disqualified, people suspected of driving under the influence of drink or drugs and antisocial off-road bikers.

The week was supported by Durham County Council, Sedgefield MP Phil Wilson and Gestamp, who provided every school with big cartoon lollipop figure to place outside their premises.

A poster competition also saw pupils design road safety posters which were displayed on the fences outside their schools, with the best in each school being awarded a prize.

Sergeant Andy Boyd said: “This has been a hugely successful week around issues that are very emotive in the community, and feedback from the community has been amazing.

“We all want to keep our kids safe, and in the main, parents attending our schools have been very supportive and understanding.

“Our week of action is not all about enforcement - engagement and education is crucial in trying to reduce problems associated with road safety particularly around the schools.

“We hope that this week goes some way to making road users attending, or passing schools think twice before parking inconsiderately or driving at excessive speed.”

He added: “My team will be building on this week, carrying out random spot checks at all schools, and targeting persistent offenders.

“The schools have been amazing in their support of this week, in particular the Mini Police at each school who have assisted in handing out leaflets to raise awareness.

A TWO-wheeled trailer has been stolen from a council depot in Shildon.
Police are appealing for help tracing the red Foster three-tonne tipper trailer, which was taken from the depot in Harker Street at some point between 5.25am and 5.45am on Sunday, April 5.
The trailer has a solid bottom and mesh top, with rear-opening barn doors.

It’s great when you are going on holiday, however we often forget some basic things which leave us unprotected when we are going away. See our top tips below for Holiday cyber security:

Do not check in on social media: We see this daily-people will tag themselves at the airport or state on social media that they are going away and generally how long for. Think about what you are posting on social media. Do not advertise your home as unoccupied as this potentially makes you a target for crime. Additionally, if your home is targeted and you posted on social media you are on holiday, some insurance companies will be reluctant to pay out as you have advertised your home as unoccupied/insecure.

Social media usage: This links in with the above, but think about what you are sharing on social media. We have a tendency to overshare, so think about what you are posting, and who you are posting about. If you are posting a picture of others, ensure that you seek their permission first. Post holiday snaps when you return, not whilst you are away.

Do not post pictures of your travel documents or passport information on social media: This could potentially leave you open to ticketing fraud.

If using free Wi-Fi, download a VPN: A VPN (Virtual Private Network) helps protect you when you are browsing the internet. Assume that all free Wi-Fi is insecure, as it most likely is. Do not use free public Wi-Fi to do anything confidential on the internet, or input log in information. If you need to do this, use your mobile data or use a VPN when using Wi-Fi.

Back up and update your devices before going away: Updates are important for the security of our devices, so ensure that they are running the most up to date software. This means you won’t have the hassle of updating your device whilst away. Back-ups are important too-if you encounter any issues with your device whilst on holiday, you can restore them from your back up when you return.

Utilise two factor authentication for your accounts: We would advise that you should have this set up anyway on your accounts, but make sure that you have 2FA turned on before you go away. This means that an additional piece of information is required before you log in to your accounts, and can be a useful tool in stopping your account being accessed by someone who shouldn’t. 2FA (two factor authentication) can be found in your app/account settings and turned on from there.

PCP has teamed up with ROF 59 in Newton Aycliffe to fundraise for the Hydrotherapy Pool replacement campaign through a Zip Wire Challenge! The Zip Wire Challenge will take place over a two week period starting at 11.00 am on Friday 3 May and ending 11 May.

We are aiming for 1,700 ‘zips’ and the number is significant, it represents one zip wire for every 10 heroic ‘Aycliffe Angels’ or Royal Ordinance Factory workers and we’re also aiming to achieve this before the deadline of 11th May, to coincide with the historic day in mid-May when the blitz ended, almost 78 years ago. ROF 59 have kindly agreed to donate 50% of all takings to PCP! The zip wire costs £5 per person and if we can get 1700 people to have a go then we’d raise an astounding £4,250 plus any other donations.

Further Phishing emails in circulation-see below for advice from Durham Cyber SafetyFollowing on from our Phishing email we received last week, the team have had numerous examples of current phishing emails sent in to our Facebook page. One of which was a rather convincing email which contained a link to receive a tax refund.

We want to remind people to please remain vigilant!

No matter how convincing the email looks, never click on any links contained within the email or open any attachments. These could contain malware, or direct you to a fake but very real looking website.

Don’t be fooled by what the email says: Phishing emails will often say that you need to ‘take action urgently’ or reassure you that they are legitimate by stating that ‘The office will never request personal information’ in order to fool you.

No matter how convincing, do not follow the emails instructions: If you are in doubt contact the company or organisation yourself to check the validity of the message.
Check the full email address of the sender: The senders address may state that it is from your bank or HMRC, however you click on the senders email address to bring up the ACTUAL email address of the sender. This will show the full email address of the sender.

Never give out your personal information out to an unknown source. No real organisation will request your bank details or personal information via an email.

Never reply to the email: This will potentially make you a target for future scams. Delete the email or send it to your junk folder.

Do you know what Smishing is?
See below for advice on how to avoid being caught out by Smishing 👇👇📱📱Yesterday we received a rather exciting text message saying that we were due a tax refund!!

Unfortunately, this is not a real text message, but an example of SMISHING.

What is Smishing?

This is a term used to describe SMS Phishing. Similarly to phishing emails, criminals will send a message in the hope that they can manipulate the recipient into taking various actions which can lead to them being defrauded or a victim of crime.
The fraudulent text will usually claim to be from a trusted organisation such as a bank or HMRC.
Common examples of smishing messages are:

• Your bank, informing you that there is a ‘problem with your account’ such as irregular activity or lack of funds.
• A retailer, offering ‘vouchers’ or ‘gift cards’.
• A technology provider such as Apple or Google, notifying that you ‘need to validate an account’.
• A parcel delivery company, notifying you that you need to ‘confirm that you want a parcel to be delivered’.
• HMRC, informing you that you are ‘due a tax refund’.

How to avoid becoming a victim of smishing

• Do not click on links in text messages unless you are 100% certain that they are genuine and well-intentioned.
• Take time to consider your actions before responding to text messages.
• Ask yourself if the sender, if genuine, would really contact you via this text. DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINKS OR ATTACHMENTS IN THE MESSAGE.
• Recognise threats of financial issues or offers that seem too good to be true, for what they really are.
• If in doubt, call the correct number of the organisation or individual from whom the text claims to have been sent, to check its authenticity.
• Remember that even if the text message seems to come from someone you trust, their number may have been hacked or spoofed.
• Do not respond to the text message. Doing so could result in your details being added to a ‘suckers’ list’ and you will be inundated with similar messages.

Officers are appealing for information following a one vehicle collision near Redworth village.

The incident occurred just after 7.30am on Monday (April 15) southbound on the A6072.

It is believed the rider of a SYM JET scooter was travelling along the carriageway when he fell from the bike on a right hand turn and collided with a kerb and roadside furniture.

Please be mindful of 'sextortion' scam emails in circulation 👇👇Scam email alert!! 📧📧

We are receiving a number of queries regarding ‘sextortion’ scam emails. These emails can potentially cause some upset if you receive them, however you need to be mindful that it is a scam.

These emails will usually claim that you have been filmed committing a sexual act on your own device/computer, or that you have been accessing pornographic sites. The criminals will then attempt to blackmail you by stating that they will release this video of you to friends and colleagues, or on social media. The email will usually demand payment via Bitcoin, or another form of Crypto Currency.

Why did I receive this email?

These emails are a form of PHISHING. Phishing emails are untargeted emails sent out to thousands of email addresses that have been obtained by the criminals. It is possible that your email has been part of a data breach which has enabled you to receive this email, along with many other people.

What should I do if I receive one of these?

Don’t panic and seek advice: We have found a lot of people feel apprehensive to seek advice when they have received these emails due to the content. Our team and Action Fraud will be happy to advise on scam emails of this nature.

Don’t reply to the email or feel pressured to pay any money: If you reply you are confirming that it is a live email address, and potentially will make yourself a target for future scams. Never pay any money-that is what they want you to do and will try any tactic to pressurise you in to paying.

Delete the email or relocate it to your spam/junk folder. Do the same with any other scam emails.

Perform a password reset and run antivirus software/scans: Ensure that you have a strong password on your email account and utilise 2FA (Two Factor Authentication). You may be receiving these emails as a result of a virus, so run a scan to ensure that there is no malware lurking on your device.

Always install the latest software and app updates.

If you have received this email, report it to Action Fraud as a phishing email.

POLICE are appealing for information after a scooter rider suffered serious injuries in an accident near Newton Aycliffe.
The incident occurred just after 7.30am on Monday (April 15) on the southbound carriageway of the A6072 near Heighington Village.
It is believed the rider of a Sym Jet scooter was travelling along the carriageway when he lost control of the vehicle on a right hand bend and fell from his vehicle, colliding with the kerb.
The impact caused serious injuries to the rider, a 19-year-old from the Bishop Auckland area, who was taken to The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for treatment.

Keep yourself safe and your information private when gaming online 🎮🎮🎮🎮Good news PlayStation owners! PlayStation owners are finally able to change their gaming ID, which is something long overdue. What is important about being able to change gaming ID’s, and why are Durham Cyber Security discussing this?

Believe it or not, your gaming name or ID can potentially give away personal information about you. When gaming online we urge everyone to protect their personal information, which includes things like real name, age, date of birth and location.

Having a gamer ID such as GAMERDAN09 gives away information such as a name (Dan) and an approximate age/year they were born. We urge people to double check what information have on display on your online gaming profile. If you have children, please check what information they are putting out online, and take any necessary steps to safeguard them

Remember:

Don’t reveal any personal information about yourself. This includes in your gaming ID/name, or in any game bio’s that you have. Ensure this is the case on ALL online profiles, including Xbox, PC and Nintendo.

Ensure your account is secure with a strong password: This should be at least 8 characters long, and have a mixture of numbers, letters, capitals and lower cases, and symbols.

Monitor who you are chatting to: Be wary chatting with strangers online in games. Do not reveal any personal information about yourself, or any information linked to your accounts. If you are suspicious of an account, report and block it.

Utilise parental settings: All consoles have built in parental settings. Check the individual consoles instructions on how to set these up if you have children. Parental settings can limit things like chat, friend’s requests, in game purchases, and limit inappropriate content such as explicit games and websites.

If the answer is yes, please be mindful of the potential security risks when using public Wi-Fi hotspots. Unauthorised people can intercept what you are doing online; this could include capturing your passwords and reading your private emails. Similarly, criminals can mimic nearby Wi-Fi hotspots so you do not know which hotspot you are logging on to.

How can you keep yourself safe?

Do not connect to unknown hotspots: Wherever possible, connect to well known, commercial hotspot providers such as BT OpenZone or T Mobile.

If you have to conduct any activity online that requires log in information or anything personal, use your 3G or 4G mobile network. These networks have in built security. If you need to use a laptop/tablet, you can always “tether” it to your mobile device and share your 3G/4G connection.

Use a VPN: VPN’s (Virtual Private Networks) are easy to download, and usually come in the form of an app/program for your device. This means that any data that is sent across the internet is encrypted and harder to be intercepted by criminals. Remember to only use VPN’s provided by reputable service providers.

Do you know what ransomware is??RANSOMWARE ALERT!!

Do you know that there are types of malware that give criminals the ability to lock a computer from a remote location? This piece of malware is called RANSOMWARE. A pop up will be displayed on the device screen which will usually inform the owner that the computer will not be unlocked until a sum of money is paid. The widest known varieties of ransomware that have been used in recent times are Crypto Locker and WannaCry.

Why might you get ransomware?

-Opening a malicious email or attachment.
-Click on a malicious link in an email, instant message, social networking site or other website.
-Visiting a corrupt website-often these are pornographic in nature.
-Opening infected files from web based digital file delivery companies (eg Dropbox).
-Opening corrupt macros in application documents (word processing, spreadsheets etc).
-Inserting corrupt CDs/DVDS

How can you avoid ransomware?

-Do not reply to, or click on links contained in unsolicited or spam emails from companies or individuals that you do not recognise.
-Only visit websites you know to be reputable.
-Always install updates to software and apps-including systems-as soon as prompted.
-Ensure you have effective and updated antivirus/antispyware software and firewall running before you go online.

Be on the lookout for the current TV Licensing Phishing campaign! 👇👇👇**Phishing alert-TV License Phishing Campaign**

We are aware of a current ongoing TV Licensing Phishing campaign which is in circulation at the moment. These emails have been reported to Action Fraud in high numbers. Victims who click on the link are led to a convincing looking TV Licensing website – where fraudsters can obtain bank account details and commit identity fraud.

Reports made to Action Fraud identify that the current TV Licensing phishing emails are part of a larger scam where criminals call individuals claiming to be bank employees.

This is how the scam works:

1. The victim receives a TV Licensing phishing email with links to a convincing-looking website that steals personal and financial details.

2. Within a week or two, victims will receive a phone call from a fraudster claiming to be from the fraud department of the victim’s bank. The fraudsters are able to convince victims they are genuine banking staff by providing some of the personal details that were obtained using the fake TV Licensing emails and websites.

Please follow the below advice on how to avoid being a victim of these types of scams:

Unsolicited emails, texts and calls:
Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails and never respond to messages that ask for your personal or financial details.

Don’t assume a phone call or email is authentic:
Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name or address), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. Remember, criminals can spoof the phone numbers and email addresses of companies you know and trust, such as TV Licensing.

Requests to transfer money:
Your bank will never call and ask you for your PIN, full banking password, or ask you to transfer money out of your account.

What to do if you’ve fallen victim:
Let your bank know as soon as possible and monitor your bank statements regularly for any unusual activity.
If you suspect your identity may have been stolen you can check your credit file quickly and easily online. You should do this every few months anyway using a reputable service provider and following up on any unexpected or suspicious results.

It happened on Emerson Way outside the Iron Horse Hotel in Newton Aycliffe at 2.40pm on Saturday, March 30 and involved a KTM 350 motorbike and Volkswagen Golf.

Both vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when they collided.

POLICE are trying to trace two dog walkers who may be able to assist in an investigation in the Newton Aycliffe area.
Officers are investigating an incident which took place on Thursday, March 21 in a wooded area beside the disused railway path which runs from Travellers Green to Blue Bridge, an area which is popular with local dog walkers.
Officers are keen to speak to two potential witnesses, a man and a woman who were seen walking their dog in the area between 7pm and 9pm that night.

PHISHING EMAIL ALERT 👇👇👇PHISHING EMAIL ALERT!

When checking our emails, we often come across emails which are trying to obtain information about us, scam us, or potentially release malicious software on to our devices. These emails are known as PHISHING emails. They are a form of untargeted attack and very often will claim you have won something, will receive something for free, or that you need to act quickly due to an issue or problem (eg bank/account issues).

Your spam folders will pick most of these up, but please remain vigilant and delete any scam emails that may make their way to your normal inbox. We have included some screenshots of recent phishing emails that our officers have received this last week.

REMEMBER:

Never click on any links or attachments from unknown senders: The links or attachments could release harmful software onto your device, or potentially direct you to a fake but real looking website.

Check the grammar and spelling in the email: Often phishing emails will be poorly written and have incorrect spelling and grammar. They will be addressed to “dear customer” or to your email address, rather than your name.

Check the senders email address: The sender may appear as “PayPal” but if you click on the sender’s name, it will reveal the full email address of the sender. If you do not recognise it, it is likely fake.

Look at what the email is telling you to do: We rarely get things for free, so double check what is being offered-if it seems too good to be true, it most likely is! If it claims to be from your bank and there are issues with your accounts, contact the bank or company yourself to verify the validity of the email.

Don’t contact the sender: Do not reply to the sender. This will confirm to them that it is a valid email account which is accessed by a person. Delete the email.

If you think you have fallen for one of these phishing emails, please report it straight away to Action Fraud so that it can be investigated. Contact your bank to also make them aware as they may be able to stop any financial transactions. You can contact Action Fraud either by 0300 123 2040, or via www.actionfraud.police.uk. ... Handy advice from Durham Cyber Safety on keeping safe on games consoles 🎮🎮🎮We LOVE games consoles here at Cyber Safety HQ! We actively encourage parents to be involved with their children’s gaming habits and actively take an interest.

Whilst we do love games consoles, please remember to take sufficient steps to protect yourself and children when gaming online. There are still potential risks associated with consoles including privacy problems, personal information being left on consoles and PC’s, webcam worries, online predators, fraud, and hidden fees.

We actively urge parents to monitor their child’s activity when gaming online, and please bear in mind the following:

Age ratings: The Pegi ratings for games consoles are there for a reason. These will reflect what content is in the game, including bad language, violence and sexual content. The Pegi rating will also reflect the online capabilities of the game. Please only let your child play age appropriate games.

Online security: Ensure usernames and gamertags do not give out any personal information. This is the same for any information on your profile. Manage your online security settings on your console and any online profiles. Keep your personal information private!

Passwords: Ensure you use secure passwords for gaming accounts, particularly when they are linked to a paid for subscription such as Xbox live, or to a PayPal or bank account. Turn off purchases or make them password restricted for any children on the consoles. This can help prevent any unwanted fees or purchases!

Online chat: Check what the chat capabilities are for online games. If there is chat, there will be filters or ways to moderate and turn off the in game chat. If a child is playing a game with chat facilities, discuss with your child appropriate online chat and reporting. If necessary, disable any chat features for younger players.

Consoles settings: A common mistake parents do is register a console in their child’s name and AGREE that they are over 18 years of age when they are not. If you have anyone under 18 using a console, set up a parental account and then register the child on the console with their real age. All consoles have in built parental settings, and by setting up a parental and child’s account, you can monitor and restrict what they are accessing. This includes stopping them accessing anything that is age inappropriate, chatting to strangers, making unplanned purchases and so on.

Roblox is a gaming platform whereby multiple players can interact and play online. It is a very popular gaming site, and has a collection of games aimed predominantly at 8-18 year olds. It should be noted however that players of all ages can use the site.

Roblox is currently available to play on PC, phone, tablet and Xbox one. Every game on Roblox has been created by users, and there is a wide variety of games to choose from. Many users like Roblox for its creative and social elements, and it can be a good platform for children to use providing they know about safe online gaming

What should parents be aware of?

Despite the games being aimed at 8-18 year olds, there are no age restrictions in place. This means that both adults and young people can potentially play and communicate with each other on the platform.

All of the games are multiplayer and are played online. They contain a text chat feature in game and this is visible to other players in that individual game.

As Roblox is a creative game, there is a section called the Roblox Studio where players can use their imagination to create their own games to share with others. As the content is user generated, some of the content is not suitable for children (eg may contain imagery of weapons, blood, sexual content etc).

There is in game currency called Robux. This can be bought with real money in the game and then can be used to purchase items in Roblox.

TOP TIPS
Stay engaged and have regular conversations with your child: We actively encourage parents to show an interest in what games your children are playing. Do this by having regular conversations and even play those games with your child. This is the best way to be aware of what they are accessing. If children know you are interested, they may feel more at ease talking to you about any issues they have when gaming.

Stress the importance of personal information: Make sure that your child understands the importance of keeping their personal information safe, such as real name, date of birth, and address. Ensure that their gaming name does not reveal any personal details, and that their bio on Roblox does not contain personal information either.

Stress that they speak with an adult straight away if the chat in game is inappropriate. Make sure your child knows how to block and report users.
Make sure that your child only has “real” friends in the friends list. Explain what friends are and the importance of “stranger danger”.

Set parental controls that are right for your family. Chat can be disabled, and parental PINs can also be put in place to stop children adjusting these settings.

There are additional safety features for under 13s, so it is important to check that your child’s account is registered with their correct age. Players under the age of 13 have a symbol next to their username at all times, although this isn’t visible to other players. This means they will only have access to games that are age appropriate for them.

Officers are appealing for information following an increase in criminal damage on Macmillan Road in Newton Aycliffe.

Residents are having ongoing issues with youths throwing stones at windows and running off.

The youths are known to disrupt the elderly residents and on one occasion have smashed the ground floor window of one of the properties.

PC Neal Jones of Bishop Auckland response said: “Newton Aycliffe should be a desirable location for the community to live, we will take all measures to ensure they know we will not tolerate this behaviour.

“We would also ask for support from parents to ensure they know where and what their children are up to in the evenings”.

Officers are appealing for witnesses after a woman was robbed outside of a cash-point in Newton Aycliffe.

The incident happened at around 12.30pm on Friday (March 1).

A woman was using the cash machine outside of Barclays Bank on Beveridge way when the male suspect approached her and took a sum of money.

A 44-year old man was quickly detained at the scene and later arrested on suspicion of robbery.

PC Natalie Winter, from Bishop Auckland CID said: “We would like to thank members of the public for their help in assisting the vulnerable lady.

Most modern games now are played online, or have an online element to them such as in game chat or purchases. Many online games are great fun, offer an extra element to multiplayer games, and can improve communication between people. As much as we love online gaming, make sure that you protect yourself when gaming online.

1) In big multiplayer games (think Fortnite, Apex Legends or Black Ops 4) the presence of such a large online community can lead to unmoderated, unfiltered discussions, and can pose a variety of risks such as:
- Inadvertently giving away personal information, including passwords, email, home address or age.
- All the dangers associated with online chat

2) Be wary of criminals when buying in game currency, or currency that can be spent in online stores such as Xbox Live and PSN. Only buy from legitimate sellers or through the online console stores themselves. Be wary of people who approach you online with the promise of discounts and offers.

3) When PC gaming, only play games online when you have effective and updated antivirus/anti spyware software and a firewall running.

4) Verify the authenticity and security of files downloaded, and only purchase games/software from reputable sources.

5) Use strong passwords, and ensure that your real name is not given out online. Ensure that your gaming ID/gamertag does not reveal any personal information about you.

6) If children game online, check what they are playing is age appropriate. Ensure that they do not have any personal information on their games, and that they are only communicating with ‘real’ friends, and not strangers.

7) Utilise privacy settings on your gaming accounts: you can restrict chat settings, what other players can see on your gaming profile, and even what games can be played on certain devices.

8) ALL games consoles have parental settings built in: You can set parental accounts and manage your child’s activity whilst they are gaming. Please refer to the individuals console instructions on how to set these.

TikTok-What is it? 📱📱📱

It’s a social media app that gives users the opportunity to share 60 second short videos with friends, family, or the entire world. The videos range from funny sketches to lip sync videos with special effects. It is very popular with users under 16 years.

The minimum age is 13 according to TikTok’s terms and conditions.

What are the risks?

When you download the app users can see ALL the content without creating an account, although they are not able to post, like or share anything until they’ve set up an account on the app.

By default, all accounts are public, so anyone on the app could potentially see what your child shares however only approved users can send them messages. There is the potential that users can be contacted by strangers on the app.

What can I do to keep safe on the app?

People should be aware of cyber bullying, and that any online platform can be a forum for this. Ensure you are aware of the reporting tools and how to delete users and report them.

Set your account to private: You can approve or deny users and limit incoming messages to followers only. However note that even with a private account, profile photos, usernames and bio’s are still visible, so ensure that these do not give away personal information or are inappropriate.

Children may be tempted to gain more ‘likes’ or ‘follows’ on the app by doing something inappropriate, so it’s important to have a conversation with your child about what they are sharing and who with.

Stress with any children using the app the importance of their digital footprint, and who they communicate with online. ‘Stranger danger’ is very much applicable in the online world as well as the physical world.

Can anyone who witnessed a pedestrian knocked over at the Eden Arms roundabout on Tuesday 15th January at 4:15pm please leave your contact details in a PM so I can reach you please.

The lady who was knocked over was wearing a dusky pink dufflecoat over a Sainsburys uniform and we are trying to find witnesses and/or the driver of the car, along with any other information or video, dashcam footage etc.

She has undergone surgery for a broken leg but is hopeful of a full recovery. I’m trying to find the lady at the scene who helped and the man who brought her home.

Be mindful of Social Media Phishing 👇👇SOCIAL MEDIA PHISHING ALERT

Its common that emails, text messages and phone calls are used by criminals to approach people, however we also see that people become victims of crime due to SOCIAL MEDIA PHISHING.

Social media phishing can present itself as a link in a tweet, or a post on your social media or video hosting site. It can also be in a direct message advertising a gift or special offer, or ironically warning you to take action to avoid some kind of financial loss. These messages can be sent using common social media messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

How to avoid being a victim?

Do not click on links in posts, tweets or direct message unless you are 100% certain that they are genuine and well intentioned.

Ask yourself if somebody genuine would really contact you in this way with this information.

Recognise threats of financial issues or offers that seem too good to be true, for what they really are.

Even if the post or tweet seems to come from someone you trust, their account may have been hacked or spoofed. If the post seems out of the ordinary, it is likely that it has been hacked.

If the approach is via Twitter, note that accounts of legitimate businesses usually feature a blue ‘verified’ tick to indicate that the account is authentic. They will also never request login credentials.

If you are suspicious of the post, contact the company/person directly through different means such as a telephone number or email address. Legitimate organisations will be happy to advise if the post is legitimate.

If you have been a victim of social media phishing, report it to the social media network via the reporting mechanisms on the site or app. If you have lost money as a result of social media phishing, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 20 40, or via the website at www.actionfraud.police.uk. ...
