Year 10 students at Woodham Academy were recently given the opportunity to visit Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, New College Durham and Durham Sixth Form Centre as part of the school’s enrichment programme. This aims to give students an insight into life after leaving school and the various options they have available.

On each trip students were allowed to choose which ‘courses’ they would like to sample in the morning and afternoon, delivered through taster sessions. At Queen Elizabeth options included A-Level law, maths, English, computing, psychology, sociology, film and media. New College Durham options included hospitality and catering, beauty therapy, early years, hairdressing, graphic design, and uniformed public services. The final visit to Durham Sixth Form Centre offered students sessions including forensic science, criminology, classical civilizations, Biology, Physics, and games development, as well as sports students going to Ramside Golf Club and Durham University for the day

Dave Walker (Head of Careers) said “By giving students lots of opportunities to sample different Further Education establishments, the school hopes students will make a well-rounded decision about what they would like to do after they have completed their GCSEs. The visits are proving very popular with our students impressed at the range of courses on offer at each of the colleges.”
