in the community, with the community, for the community

MOVING ON WITH THE COMMUNITY
Last weekend was an emotional time for The Newton News. On Saturday we went to the ‘time to say goodbye’ to our founder Syd Howarth. Then, on Sunday, we joined the impressive community turnout to mark Remembrance Sunday and the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War One.
Syd devoted his life to creating a caring community. The fallen of our wars paid the ultimate price, fighting for a better world. This places an obligation on all of us now to continue building the Newton Aycliffe community – we have big shoes to fill.
The Newton News was created as, and has always been proud to be, a Community Newspaper … and it is our determination that ‘community’ shall continue at the heart of all we do.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS
Last week, Newton Press attended the Durham County Council Environmental Awards, and was delighted to be declared winner of the ‘Greener Business’ category for our environmentally friendly print technology.
We were pleased to see the town’s Horndale Residents’ Association be ‘Highly Commended’ in the ‘Community Partnership’ for a truly impressive list of good works, which have helped build community resilience and cohesion, and which have had a transformative effect on local anti-social behaviour and social isolation.
COMMUNITY
What struck us most – as no fewer than 45 short-listed contenders for the twelve different awards were systematically described and celebrated – were the literally thousands of hours of volunteer time that members of these nominated groups had donated to their local causes … in addition, of course, to the untold hours of other voluntary initiatives which were not entered or short-listed this year.
Newton Aycliffe is privileged to have many such groups – for instance the wonderful Lifeline Helping Hands group.
Local government provides quality services, but it is the Councils’ partner groups and individuals who strengthen our community through their selfless volunteer work.
Thank you.
