John Clare attended the Eden Field housing site at Agnew 5 to be present when the Chairman of DCC Jan Blakey, and Housing Portfolio-holder Eddie Tomlinson, officially cut the first sod.

For years, DCC has sold land to developers for them to build houses at a profit. This is DCC’s first experiment with co-building the homes itself, to maximise its income from the disposal of the land (ie to get the profit on the house sales), and also to create a revenue income from market rental housing. In addition, there are to be twelve affordable homes (8 for rent by Livin, and four for sale at a perpetual 20% discount).

The first tranche of houses will be built on the west side of the estate (adjacent to the Well House estate). The Show Homes will be ready by June. It promises to be a popular place to live – three houses have been sold in advance already!

Representatives from Chapter Homes, the builders, were present, and it was lovely to chat to them about the development. They are determined to be responsible builders and, if there is anything you want to know or are worried about, contact John Clare sooner rather than later and I will find out from them.

John’s photo shows Cllrs Tomlinson and Blakey with DCC officers. The eagle-eyed among you will realise that – for obvious reasons – we took the photos on the other side of Woodham Way! Don’t worry – all the houses are going to be built ‘behind’ that fence!
