A group of Year 9 students recently attended a Durham4schools workshop, ‘The Normans in Durham’, at Palace Green Library. They had a very informative guided tour of Durham Castle visiting the Great Hall, Buttery, Black Staircase and other areas not usually open to visitors. Along the way they learnt how the castle was built up and why it is so important in Durham’s history.

The afternoon session took place in the Museum of Archaeology and the Learning Centre. The students studied artefacts from the Norman period and tried on replica chain mail and armour. They finished the day learning about how money was made in the local mint and had a go at designing their own coins.
