Durham Greenpeace Group rallied for allies at Durham Market Place on Saturday 24th August for the Global Climate Strike on Friday 20th September.

Inspired by Greta Thunberg’s strikes, which has seen school children and young people around the world staging monthly protests for radical climate action, the Global Climate Strike is a joint response by a coalition of NGOs, unions and social movements to the young people’s call to action.

The strike will see millions of protesters around the world walk out of our workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels.

Pauline Hall, Group-Coordinator for Durham Greenpeace, is on a mission to mobilise Durham residents to join the global action. Pauline said: “On Friday 20 September, Greta Thunberg and young people across the world are striking to demand urgent action to prevent the climate crisis – but they can’t do it alone. Whatever your age, everyone from in and around Durham is needed to join the Global Climate Strike and get our government to declare a climate emergency.”

Durham Greenpeace will be joined by the Durham Climate Choir to inspire passers-by with thought provoking lyrics, including climate-change anthem ‘Sing for the Climate’ by Just Earth and Neil Young’s ‘Natural Anthem’. Lyrics will be provided by the choir on the day so members of the public can join in the protest.

Susan Wesley, Member of Transition Durham and Coordinator of Durham Climate Choir, said: “The climate crisis is an emergency — we want everyone to start acting like it. If we don’t transition away from fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy, the injustice of the climate crisis will only get worse. We’ll be singing loud and proud to make sure the government hears us!”.
