The country’s top performing police force is recruiting new Special Constables.

Applications to join Durham Constabulary as a Special Constable will open at 9.30am on Friday, September 14.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Friday, September 28.

‘Specials’ as they are known are volunteer police officers who commit a minimum of 16 hours per month to supporting front-line policing across County Durham and Darlington.

They have the same powers as regular police officers, and wear the same uniform.

Chief Officer Dale Checksfield, who heads up Durham Special Constabulary, said: “Being a Special Constable is one of the most challenging roles a volunteer can do, but it’s also one of the most rewarding. As well as playing a vital role in supporting our front-line officers across the county, you’ll make friends and develop skills for life.

“We’re looking for people who want to make a real difference in their communities, and we welcome people from all backgrounds and all walks of life.

“Whether you’re retired and want to put your new-found spare time to good use, or are just starting out in life and want to develop your skills, if you have the passion and drive to help your community and support people in their hour of need, we want to hear from you.”

Ron Hogg, Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington, said: “Special Constables are vital to the force, delivering front-line policing alongside regular officers. This is an excellent opportunity for people looking to gain new experiences and skills, while helping to keep all of our communities safe.”

Specials complete a rigorous training programme before qualifying to go out on patrol.

Travel expenses within County Durham, training and equipment are provided.

Applicants must be 18 or over and must be physically fit enough to perform the role – fitness is tested annually.

Information roadshows will be held at Derwentside College September 11, police headquarters in Durham on September 12 and 13, Bishop Auckland College on September 17 and the Dolphin Centre in Darlington on September 18, where applicants can find out more about the role and ask any questions they may have.
