Dear Sir,
What on earth is the County Council doing with our street lighting? I live on Alverton Drive and at around 9.00pm I went outside to get something from my car. I’m not exaggerating when I say, the street was pitch black.
At first I thought there was a power cut, then I discovered the street lights had been changed earlier in the day the by a team of engineers. I can only assume that the council are trying to save money by using lower powered lights.
The new lights are next to useless, they barely light up the immediate area around the lamppost. All of the houses and drives are totally unlit. Even the pavements between the lampposts are insufficiently lit.
Having been a victim of burglary I now have a real concern that there is a real possibility that car and house crime is going to be on the increase.
Has the council done a proper risk assessment of this lighting before signing up to these changes or have they just looked at the numbers? Maybe they would like to have a walk up my street after dark (don’t forget your torch).
Presumably our Council tax will be reduced to reflect the poor lighting and the savings been made, or will it be an excuse to increase it. First it was the garden waste that we are now to be charged for. Now we are to put up with sub standard street lighting. What will be next I dread to think. No doubt there will be some excuse about government cuts and having to save money.
